Annual
Scientific Conference on Monitoring the Progress of Democracy, Good
Governance and Civil Society
Central to our
understanding of the overall democratization process and its comparative
manifestations is the holding of annual Conferences during which the
progress of democratization and good governance practices in different
countries are discussed.
The conferences
are also important to the co-ordination of DPMF activities, its network
and its governance. The conference topic will vary every year but
the general theme will be the monitoring of the democratization process
and the practice of good governance. There are several objectives
for holding such biennial conference.
Firstly to provide
a forum for a serious scientific discussion between different groups
amongst those involved in and interested in the consolidation and
institutionalization of democracy and good governance.
Secondly the conference
provides a forum for different research groups and national policy
forums to meet and discuss progress or otherwise of their activities.
Thirdly the annual
conference is the occasion at which latest scientific findings on
policies and the policy process are discussed and debated.
Finally the conference
provides the opportunity for DPMF to consult with important members
of its constituency. This is a useful feedback and governance exercise
for DPMF.
The issues and
themes on which the conference focuses, varies each year. Each year
different participants are invited to the conference but are from
the same three constituencies of DPMF. However, because the conference
is normally held in Addis Ababa, participants includes a large number
of Ethiopian NGOs, UN Agencies, the Diplomatic and Donor Communities
based in Addis Ababa.
